Chinese Students’ Beliefs about English Language and Their L2 Motivation

Introduction. This study adopts a Global Englishes perspective to examine dimensions within beliefs about English language held by Mainland Chinese university students. It also assesses whether and how these impact the students’ motivation learn (L2 motivation). Materials Methods. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 460 students learning as Foreign Language at large public in China. The contained 28 items assess their L2 motivation. One section of gathered demographic information respondents. research instrument approved University’s Research Ethics Committee. Exploratory factor analysis multiple regression were performed analyze data. Results. identified four distinct learners’ beliefs, namely, Beliefs Standard English, Englishes, education China English. Three motivation, International posture, Integrative orientation Instrumental orientation. ensuing detected positive statistically significant relationships between some Particularly, found have strongest on Discussion Conclusion. findings from exploratory support views that languagerelated dimensions. They give empirical evidence validity notion. From teaching perspective, highlight need adopt GE-oriented pedagogies.
